Need a Change? How About Drinking Your Veggies?

Sometimes eating well can be boring- if you don’t have new ways to branch out.  During pregnancy we know we need to eat plenty of fresh foods, so here is a delicious way to get lots of vegetables into your diet.

Fresh Vegetable Smoothie

You will need: cucumber, celery, spinach, parsley or cilantro, avocado, filtered water, lime juice, pink Himalayan salt  and garlic

Fill your blender or Vita Mix 2/3 of the way with spinach

Add 1-2 t. of garlic.  I process large amounts in my food processor and keep it sealed in the freezer.

Add in a flavorful herb such as cilantro or parsley (you can use 1-2 big handfuls, depending on your taste)

1 t. to 1T of REALSALT or pink, Himalayan salt from the health food store.  These types of salt offer a spectrum of minerals to balance out the salt.  Using this type of salt and drinking vegetable smoothies on a regular basis will help to prevent a myriad of pregnancy related health issues such as edema, muscle cramping and low amniotic fluid.  (Hint: you need more magnesium)

One avocado

About 1 1/2 cups of cold water

Five small keylimes or 1-2 large limes

2 stalks of celery

1/2 of a cucumber

Blend until smooth and processed enough to drink through a straw.  You will want to add more salt, lime juice or garlic to taste.  The ingredients in this smoothie help to balance your pH levels, making your body more alkaline.  The high amount of fiber helps your body flush out impurities naturally and helps to prevent constipation.  The garlic is an excellent natural antibiotic, antifungal and antiviral.  And, the avocado provides great fatty acids to aid in baby’s neural development.  You need to add this fat to help your body utilize all the wonderful minerals in the smoothie.  And, this is an excellent drink for mid-afternoon as it is very energizing!

This smoothie should be stored in an airtight container and used within 36 hours.  DON’T WORRY if you really don’t care for it right away.  Sometimes pregnant women will not care for the taste of all these veggies, especially if they are not used to them.  If you just relax, breathe and drink as much as you can you can save the rest for later.  You’ll be surprised to be craving more!  Usually it takes just two are three attempts for your innate wisdom to kick in.  Your gorgeous, pregnant body will respond and ask for more of this exceptionally high-quality nutrition.  Enjoy and be sure to tell your friends about Wellpostpartum.com!
