Postpartum Depression: Identify and Correct the Underlying Causes

Here is an example of yet another integrative practice focusing on perinatal mood issues.  The following article was written by Drs. John Neustadt, ND and Steve Pieczenik, MD, PhD, NBITC.

Post-partum depression affects up to twenty-five percent of mothers. It is a debilitating and life-threatening condition that robs mothers of the ability to enjoy their babies.

Early recognition and treatment is crucial. While antidepressants can be helpful, they don’t treat the underlying biochemical causes of the disease. Antidepressants just treat symptoms. After all, no one has a deficiency in Prozac.

Pregnancy is a tremendous stress on the body. It increases a woman’s risk for nutritional deficiencies and subsequent depression. Post-partum depression is therefore simply the manifestation of subclinical nutritional deficiencies and the spectrum of biochemical changes that can occur in pregnant women.

But now the underlying biochemical causes of post-partum depression can be treated. NBI Testing and Consulting Corp. (NBITC, http://www.nbitesting.com) tests can determine deficiencies in specific amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fats that are the underlying causes of post-partum depression. Through the use of Targeted Nutrient Therapy™, customized programs are provided to clients that replenishes their deficiencies and promotes health.

What One Patient Had to Say

“My son was born in 2005. I thought it was going to be the happiest day of my life. And it was. But after a very stressful pregnancy that ended in an emergency C-section, I then experienced complications of extremely painful mastitis. I fell into a deep depression. My doctor prescribed Prozac, which helped somewhat. But I remained fatigued and depressed. Fortunately, the biochemical testing offered by NBITC found the underlying causes of my condition. Within three weeks of starting the treatment plan I was completely off my antidepressant medication, felt wonderful, and could finally enjoy my son and life. Thank you Drs. Neustadt and Pieczenik!”

―Thirty-eight year old mother of two, Bozeman, MT
